An electric shower is one of the highest-power appliances in the house, on its own heavy circuit. That's why a shower fault is usually electrical rather than plumbing - and why the repairs inside it are a job for a qualified electrician, not a DIY afternoon.
Never open an electric shower unit yourself. If it sparks, smells of burning, or trips the breaker repeatedly, leave it off and call an electrician.
Quick Checks
Make sure the ceiling pull-switch (or wall isolator) is on - it's easily knocked off.
Look at the consumer unit for a tripped breaker or RCD on the shower circuit and reset it once.
Confirm the water is on and other taps run - no water in means no hot shower out.
In winter, incoming water is colder; a high flow setting can leave it lukewarm. Lower the flow for more heat.
No Power at All
- Pull-cord or isolator switched off
- Tripped breaker or RCD on the shower circuit
- A blown connection at the unit (needs an electrician)
- If the breaker trips again the instant you reset it, stop - that's a fault
Runs Cold or Cuts Out
- The thermal cut-out has tripped after overheating - often a sign of a failing element
- Low water pressure starving the unit
- A failing heating element (the most common wear-out part)
- Limescale build-up in hard-water areas reducing performance
Why Electric Showers Fail
- The heating element
- Works hard and eventually burns out - the classic cause of a shower that's stopped heating.
- The thermal cut-out
- A safety device that trips on overheating. If it keeps tripping, something underlying needs fixing.
- The solenoid valve
- Controls water flow into the unit; when it fails the shower may not start or won't stop.
- The circuit itself
- High current means connections degrade - a job for an electrician to make safe.
When to Call an Electrician
- The breaker trips every time you switch the shower on
- Any burning smell, buzzing, or scorching at the pull-cord or unit
- No power after checking the cord, isolator and breaker
- The unit is old and the element has clearly failed
Plumber or Electrician?
Electric showers sit on the line between two trades, which is why people aren't sure who to call. The water side - the supply pipe, the isolation valve, low pressure - is plumbing. The unit itself and its heavy circuit - the element, the thermal cut-out, the cable, the pull-cord - is electrical, and the bit that draws serious current. Because most shower failures are the element, the cut-out, or the circuit, it's usually an electrician you need. If it's purely no water reaching the unit, that's the plumbing side.
Repair or Replace the Unit?
Electric showers are largely sealed units, and once the element or internals fail, repair often isn't economical compared with a new unit. As a rough guide, if the shower is over about eight years old, has lost performance, or has tripped its thermal cut-out repeatedly, replacement is usually the better spend - and a like-for-like swap keeps the install simple. An electrician will also check the existing cable is rated for any higher-power unit you fancy, since a more powerful shower can need a heavier circuit.
Hard Water Is Tough on Showers
In hard-water areas, limescale is a major reason electric showers fail early. Scale builds up on the heating element and inside the unit, making it work harder, run hotter and trip its safety cut-out - and eventually it burns the element out. If you're on the second or third shower in a few years, your water is likely the culprit. Running the shower on cold for a few seconds at the end of each use helps flush scale off the element, and in really hard areas a scale inhibitor on the supply extends the unit's life noticeably.
